Lakewood, Colorado               (see links at the bottom of the page)

The City of Lakewood has long been a bedroom community for Denver.  Our neighborhood has its roots in the time when Lakewood was hard pressed to even identify a center of activity or a downtown.  By the mid-70's, the GMCA geography was well over 90% built out and Lakewood was a large population center, but very much in the shadow of Denver.

A lot has happened since those days.  And Lakewood has grown up.  This is in evidence in many ways, most obviously is Belmar.  Belmar is now downtown Lakewood as well a cultural center with indoor and outdoor performance venues, a cultural center, library and a large natural park.

The GMCA enjoys and nurtures a strong connection with the City of Lakewood and the administration.  The administration respects GMCA as perhaps Lakewood's best example of a volunteer civic organization that is active in the community and the city.

The city's website, www.Lakewood.org, is an exceptional web site.  Anyone who has never looked at it should.  Just click on the web site here, and when you get to the home page, slowly move you pointer across the main menu items.  You will be amazed at the depth of the services offered by Lakewood.

The picture below shows the detail under just one menu item, "Arts, Parks & Recreation".  Check out each menu item for a tour of the city.

If history is your thing, or you have a curiosity about the city. this link is very good.
This is a great place to start because it offers a shorter list of most popular topics in the menu on the left side of the page.

That's a long link, but it leads you to the "Neighborhood Resource Guide".  This is a substantial document in the form of a downloadable PDF.  The PDF function includes an excellent search capability on its EDIT menu.  Use this link and look at the left margin menu.
An important City resource is the "Sector Liaison Unit" described in the Neighborhood Resource Guide (not a link)
"Sector Liaison Agents.  The Lakewood Police Department's Sector Liaison Unit is a team of selected police agents who use community crime prevention tools, community resource referrals and enforcement action to address specific problems. By patrolling the same area of the City and making contact with community groups, police agents have the opportunity to better understand the problems facing Lakewood neighborhoods, and to become better acquainted with community residents."

Just about everyone is familiar with 911, the emergency call number.  Reverse 911 is used by Lakewood to inform you emergencies like fire threat or chemical spill.  Lakewood goes one further and uses Smart 911.  This allows you to register your cell phone along with your home phone for 911 calls.  Further, you can completely describe your home and the people and special circumstances that might be found there.  This provides emergency responders with advance critical informating that could be life saving.

"Lakewood Linked" is an initiative of Mayor Murphy to connect people and the city.  A cornerstone of this program is NextDoor.com, a social site that connects neighbors, neighborhood by neighborhood.  The city uses this facility to distribute information from many of its departments.  Start on this site to consider NextDoor.
