Lost and Found Dogs and Cats

What to do if you’ve lost or found a dog or a cat, or another type of pet - This description is directed to a person who finds a dog or cat. Owners of pets should read this description to see how to protect their pet. If you have lost a pet, this description should help you see where to look and where to communicate the situation.

1. Does the animal have tags (we hope)
- The tags should identify the home and contact information
- Dogs can be identified by their license tag. Dogs in Jefferson County are required have a Foothills Animal Shelter license tag which can be traced at http://foothillsanimalshelter.org/ or by calling 303.278.7577.
- Call the owner
2. If the animal does not have any identification - put out the word
- Take a digital picture of the animal if you can or give a description (color, size, type). If you’re not good at identifying specific breeds (there are a lot), a description works well. If you’ve lost an “unusual” breed, it’s best to include its description, especially if you do not have a picture.
- Green Mountainside residents should email [email protected] to put out a bulletin (with picture if possible)
- List the animal as found on Craigslist with a picture and check Craigslist for lost and found pets.
- List the animal as found on Nextdoor.com (if you belong) with a picture
- List the lost or found animal on the Foothills Animal Shelter website - http://foothillsanimalshelter.org/services/lost-and-found/report-a-found-pet/ This site is a wealth of information, home page - www.foothillsanimalshelter.org
- Call Lakewood Animal Control at 303.987.7173, option 1, to include the information on their lost and found list or email the information to [email protected] (this email is not monitored on weekends).
- Post found notices at community gathering places.
- Dr. Roger Liehr at Foothills Animal Hospital, 13015 W Alameda Pkwy. NOTE: the stand alone animal hospital is located near the Safeway parking lot, on the corner of W. Mississippi Court and W. Ohio St. Call 303-988-0403 to make sure they are in. Dr. Liehr will check for a chip and registration as a service to our neighborhood
- Jeanne Phipers, State licensed for rescue since 1995, lives at Alkire and W. Dakota. She has a chip scanner. Call ahead - 303-985-2811.
- Lakewood Animal Control vehicles have chip scanners
- Foothills Animal Shelter has chip scanners
4. If you cannot hold on to the animal
- Call Lakewood Animal Control at 303.987.7173, option 3, and an officer will respond to pick it up. Cats are consider free- roaming animals, therefore animal control officers cannot impound them. You can transport cats directly to the Foothills Animal Shelter.
- Or take the animal to the Foothills Animal Shelter – it’s easier to find than you might think. It’s off the 6th Avenue Service Road
- Or If it is after hours for Animal Control and the shelter and it is impossible to keep a dog for a short time for the person who finds it, Jeanne Phipers (303-985-2811) can keep them on a very limited basis if the dog is not aggressive.

To get to the Foothills Animal Shelter from Green Mountain, find your way to the 6th Avenue Service Road. The the service across Indiana, and the to McIntyre. Make a left and then a left.
