Peterson Park
Contact GMCA form received in February, 2014:
I was reading the newsletter I received in the mail today and it inspired me to try "planting a seed" as it said. I feel that Peterson Park, which is directly behind Safeway, would be an excellent location for a Disc Golf Course. Disc golf is rapidly increasing in popularity, especially in our state, and the Green Mountain area has zero courses.
It's a wonderful pastime for all ages, from kindergarteners to senior citizens. Another selling point is that it is very inexpensive, especially if each hole is sponsored by a local small business. And correct me if I'm wrong but it really seems like Peterson park isn't much of a park at all really. I've never seen a single person in it. There is already ample parking on the wide street running between Peterson park and safeway.
Please consider my idea, it would be a wonderful new addition to our community and help to motivate more people to get outside and be active.

This is a fabulous idea. Just the vision we get excited about. So we looked into it. The old webmaster wasn't even sure exactly where Peterson Park was so a check with the a couple of sources was in order. First Google, then a check of Lakewood.org. Found two maps.
Could Google be wrong?
The green areas on each map below are labeled Peterson Park. If you click on the map you get a little bit bigger picture. To get oriented, W. Ohio Ave. is the sweeping curve on the north of the park going east from S. Alkire then south past Foothills Elementary and down to Mississippi Court which goes back west behind Safeway and back to Alkire.
The two green areas below are obviously not the same. But which is Peterson Park?

We checked with Larry Carlson who contributes to the history of Green Mountain:
"The Lakewood map is correct. Peterson Park is a small piece of land across from the school. The other property is privately owned and could be developed in the future."
Larry led us to find that as of April 1, 2013 the privately owned parcel is zoned "M-E-S - Mixed Use - Employment - Suburban", which provides for a very wide range of uses for the property from commercial to residential. (Reference: Lakewood Zoning Ordinance effective April 1, 2013, and the Citywide Zoning Map, both linked from http://www.lakewood.org/Zoning/,)
So Tyler, I don't know if we have enough property to have a Disc Golf Course. But GMCA was involved in another park, Mountainside Park. It was raw land and had no improvements at all until GMCA got involved with a little starter money and a receptive City of Lakewood. It all starts with just a little vision. Keep it coming. Thanks.
