UPS Packages Stolen

We live on S. Alkire and have lived in the neighborhood almost two years now. We have had two incidents now that packages have been stolen from our front porch that I'd like to report.

About two months ago, my husband had received a package, and he got notification from USPS that it had arrived. When we got home from work, it wasn't here. USPS swore that they left it at the correct address, so sadly, we could only assume that someone stole it from our front porch before we got home.

Yesterday, we left a package on the front porch to be picked up from UPS, around 7:15 am. When I left the house at 8:30 am, the package was gone, so I assumed UPS already picked it up. Well, UPS stopped by later that morning to pick up the package, and they don't have it in their system as getting picked up by another driver. Disappointingly enough, my husband and I wonder if this package wasn't stolen as well. We just can't imagine who would do this in our neighborhood, especially so early in the morning.

I thought that this might be something for our neighbors to keep an eye out for. I now we will be doing our best to avoid getting deliveries when no one is home, and will plan to drop packages off going forward.

When I received the report of stolen UPS packages, I talked with UPS and created the post that follows. I have sent a copy of this post to UPS for any additional comments.

UPS does not have a dedicated write-up describing what a neighbor should do to help protect themselves from stolen packages. Stolen packages go through a full claim process.

However, the UPS customer service representative I spoke with provide the following thoughts.

Receiving Packages

---If you have the option, require a signature for received packages. In this case if you are not home you will get a note from the driver saying when an attempt will be made to deliver the package again as well as contact information so that you can talk to UPS about when to deliver.

---You may want to have the package delivered to your work where a signature is always required.

---You can pick up your package at the UPS Customer Warehouse. The closest one to us is at

MapQuest suggests this about 18 miles away and is 25 to 32 minutes’ drive time depending on whether you use 6th Avenue or I70.

(---Access Points - UPS is testing points for drop-off and collection such as 7-11's which will expand the places you can have packages delivered for pickup at no additional charge.)

Sending Package

---If you do not want to risk putting a package out for pickup, perhaps because no one is home, you can take it to the UPS store in the King Soopers shopping center. The center can print up a UPS label for you.

---There is a drop box In the rear lobby of the Wells Fargo Bank on Union. Surely there are more of these.

---More stores and drop boxes can be found using search locations on the UPS.com site.

I realized I had done research on UPS but not USPS which was the first package. I asked Jamie and she said that persistence paid off in a situation similar to UPS' answer:

"So when we spoke with USPS they told us that we had a new delivery driver and that there was a possibility that they delivered it to another house, but when they spoke with the driver, that person swore that they delivered it to the correct address. They then told us that it was up to us to contact the sender, who decided just to send us a new product free of charge since the post office lost our package (or someone stole it). I believe the package was delivered here around 10 am in that instance, and we arrived home around 5 pm that evening.

"Unfortunately the sender had some confusion over the tracking number they provided us, and had mixed up the tracking number of our package with another package they sent out the same day, so our tracking number was lost from the get-go, which is why they sent us a new product for free.

"To sum it up, USPS left the accountability of the lost package up to the sender instead of offering us any help, since their driver swore that they delivered it here.

"Hope that helps."
