Windshield Replacement Phone Calls

2/10/2014

I live [on] S. Cole Dr. A couple of weeks ago we noticed that our
windshield was cracked when we were cleaning the snow off the
windshield. Then last week we got a call from a windshield service
asking us if we needed any repair work done. When my wife asked how they
knew that , they hung up. Maybe a coincidence, but I'm wondering if
anyone else I'm the neighborhood had a similar experience."

Phil is quick to say it might be just a coincidence. The hang up seems
peculiar. And it would make for a clever scam. Phil will mention it to
our neighborhood police liaison to see if the police department has any
pattern. We are more curious than alarmed.

As always, like the Neighborhood Watch advises, be attentive. We have a
wonderful neighborhood, one of the very safest in Lakewood. Part of
that is due to the fact that our neighbors pay attention.

Thanks Phil.

Thanks for doing an outstanding job keeping us all informed…the communication really makes a difference.

I, too, received a call from an anonymous windshield repair company within the last couple of weeks…we park our cars in the garage and have had no windshield issues, so have no ‘coincidence’ to report. The calling system from that company might have been focused on phone numbers common to the area…

Certainly keep us posted should you hear differently…

Two things come to mind. First, the Neighborhood Watch program, but that's probably for another discussion.

The Sector Liaison Agent comes to mind. I first wrote it up in the "Problem Property" page. It gives you access to a policeman that knows our neighborhood...

"Sector Liaison Agents. The Lakewood Police Department's Sector Liaison Unit is a team of selected police agents who use community crime prevention tools, community resource referrals and enforcement action to address specific problems. By patrolling the same area of the City and making contact with community groups, police agents have the opportunity to better understand the problems facing Lakewood neighborhoods, and to become better acquainted with community residents."

Windshield repair telemarketer called me too. I forget the company.
Their number is 720-675-8617.

Wow, if you key in that phone number in Google, and end up on 800Notes.com, you find the following notes:

"Called back. Recording claimed to be a google subscriber. Caller ID said "DENVER CO". I don't think the city of Denver is a google subscriber."

"I just got a call from this number at 1:48 PM and as soon as I picked up, it hung up. They did not call back. The caller ID read Denver, Colorado"

"Just got a call from this number. They did not respond when I answered. I just heard rustling in the background"

and >>>> "Called asking if I had any windshields that needed repaired."

Makes me think coincidence. (I've probably gotten such a call but I don't answer if the Caller ID isn't someone I know. People that know me will leave a message.)

I haven't had a problem with windshields, this year.
But last year I had to replace the windshields in both my 2002 Pathfinder, which always sits outside, and my 2012 Audi, which usually sits inside. Right about the same time.
This was after it had been so long since I had replaced a windshield that I couldn't remember ever having done so.
I also wondered about the 'coincidence'.
(Also note that the Pathfinder used to have someone go into it and steal the money that I had in there for parking downtown. (Has to be a neighborhood kid) So I wondered if I had an enemy that I didn't know about. (I remember what I thought of the old guys, when I was a kid)

I eventually decided that it was just the result of winter.
And just this past week, while I was driving downhill, through the intersection of Alkire to Cedar, I noticed that the Pathfinder twisted so much that there was a pop that came from somewhere, like the windshield. This was on a very cold day.

So you might be correct. Or it could just be a result of the cold this time of year, and the windshield repair shops know that. The hangup could be because of a guilty feeling, or it could just be the lack of manners that you get on the phone these days. More than once I've had a solicitor hang up on me once they realized that they weren't going to get a sale. (Which is why I hang up on solicitors, it doesn't pay to be nice to them)
Chances are that we'll never know that real answer, but I'd go with the innocent explanation first.

Regarding Phil's note about his broken windshield....
I had a similar call last week. Didn't get the name of the company but it was a Colorado cell phone number. I also live on S. Cole Drive and my truck is parked outside but I haven't had any problems with the windshield. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but you never know.

It looks like my experience was just a coincidence. I really appreciate the ability to post something like this and get input from my neighbors. Thanks to GMCA for establishing the mechanism and to all of you for sharing.

We sent the reference to our blog to Officer Steve Davis. We suggested it might be difficult to deal with.

Dave,
You’re right, it sounds odd but at least so far I don’t think there would be any way to show anything criminal in nature has taken place. It might be a good idea to document the occurrences over a period of time in case there was a time in the future that by some chance it was shown that these folks were responsible for the breaks. I’d say that’s a long shot though.
